Dreaming of Amelia

My new book, Dreaming of Amelia, is now out in Australia and New Zealand. It will come out in the UK in April next year, and in the US and Canada in June (but there, it will be called The Ghosts of Ashbury High).

It's about two new characters, mysterious strangers named Amelia and Riley, who've just transferred to Ashbury. And it's a ghost story.

Another thing: I'm getting a website. It's almost ready. My brilliant brother-in-law named Steve is designing it.

I have other things to talk about. I keep overhearing conversations about robberies, for instance. There was a curious day with a rainbow theme. I saw the preview of a breathtaking new Australian horror film called Fragment. A journalist with a notepad and pen sat down beside me. 'I hope this is not too scary,' she whispered to her friend.

Today I took Charlie swimming at the North Sydney Pool. A woman was sitting on a brick wall outside with her head in her hands. The rain was soft on everything, the bridge and the curve of the Luna Park gate.

'Is that man coming home with us?' said Charlie, unexpectedly. I turned to see where he was pointing - a stranger in speedos, nice muscle tone, pleasant face, pushing his goggles up into his wet hair. 'I don't think he's coming home with us,' I said. We went to the swimming pool cafe then, and overheard two men discuss a robbery.

So, I will write about all these things one day soon, but for now, I'd better just post this, about the new book.

Your book looks really awesome, can't wait to read it for myself! I've been reading such awesome reviews of it all around the blogosphere.

I remember you posting a while ago that you had finished writing this book, and now all you wanted was praise. Well, I finished reading Dreaming of Amelia yesterday, and I am very happy to oblige! I loved it. I loved the way the story was told through the HSC exams (just seeing those exams again, creepily replicated, was enough to send shivers down my spine), I loved the new characters, and I loved Lyd and Seb (especially Seb). Your writing style is so unique and awesome.Did I mention I loved it?

Thank you so much, Sadako and Zoe; and Zoe, I'm so glad you liked the book.

I should say now that when I finished writing that book and said, 'all i want now is praise', I really just meant that I wanted everyone to say, 'Well done, you finished your book, you may now go to the beach for a year.' And that I wasn't quite ready for editorial suggestions, at that point.

But I see now that it sounded like I was saying, 'Everyone praise me!' as if I thought I was a queen. As if I was a self-absorbed queen.

In fact, I'm glad to hear from everybody, whatever you have to say, with or without praise.

This is not to say that I want criticism now. Or that I'm not enjoying the slight misunderstanding very, very much.

Well done for finishing the book!

I came across it when I was looking for Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

I'm sure that Hunger Games is a wonderful book, but it couldn't possibly hold a candle to your own. I'm reading Dreaming of Amelia right now. I am up to English Extension 3 right now, and I'll go back and read the rest when I'm finished writing this.

I would just like to say that it is beautiful and lovely and I cannot wait to find out more about Riley and Amelia.

Hey Jaclyn,

It's me again - just finished the book!
Wow intense, not as "ghosty" as I initially feared! I have to read it again, there was so much going on! Totally relate to the characters' HSC attitude (actually just finished HSC myself last week).

Especially loved the ending! Have a nice long, relaxing break, and then KEEP WRITING!! :D Love your books!!

P.S. My one regret is the absence of Christina - one of my favourite characters :P

I just finished Dreaming of Amelia and it is amazing.

I have to admit, I did not initially think that the ghost story would be genuinely scary. However, I was really pleasantly surprised. It was subtle and creepy, and I gotta say, I did get chills on more than one occasion.

I'll try not to say too much so this comment doesn't get deleted (I understand if it does, though),but I found the creepiest part was the whole "______'s Letters to a Ghost" section.

I also loved how everything tied in together, even though they seemed completely unrelated.

Although this one was a little bit more serious than the others (or so I thought), it still had me laughing out loud, which rarely happens with books. I particularly loved the menage a trois deer line. (I don't remember exactly how it goes)

If there was one thing I could change though, it would be more Yowta772, haha. Although I do understand that he really didn't have much to do with the storyline, it just would've been nice to see more of him.

Thank you for writing such an amazing book. I'm going to re-read it now as I'm sure there was a lot I missed!

- Steph =)

ps. Is this the last of the Ashbury books? I hope not. I have become attached to some of the characters, in particular Charlie, Seb, Lydia and Emily. They ARE leaving Ashbury though, so their story is probably over :(

I love the 21st century. It is actually the most amazing thing to be able to actually speak to your favourite authors face to face. Well, not quite, but it's close, and it's crazy.

I mean, I now know that you have neighbors and an incredibly cute son and a bowl that used to be full of fruit and chocolate on your desk, and somehow it feels like you're now actually human!

This actually feels like quite a revelation. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to read your books again in quite the same way. I guess I'll be able to tell you how much of a difference it makes when I finally manage to read Dreaming of Amelia, which I am eagerly hunting down now.

I would rant on and on about how much I love your writing, but I'd end up sounding like an obsessed crazy fangirl, and I admire you too much to want to make a fool of myself in your revered presence. How does it feel to have fangirls? I'd imagine it would be a strange feeling.

One thing, though, that I've always wondered - do you think you're ever going to set any stories in Brookfield? Is that too far into criminal territory to be comfortable, or is it too soon after finishing one book to even think about others?

I've read 'Feeling Sorry for Celia', 'Finding Cassie Crazy' and just finished 'The Betrayal of Bindy' (the latter is named 'Het ongelofelijke schooljaar van Scarlett M.' here: *Scarlett M's incredible school year* - translators seem to have creative tendencies of their own as well! ;) ) and I loved it; the story has so many unexpected turns, every time I thought I knew what was REALLY going on, I was wrong. And happily surprised! It's great that the characters in all of your books (I have read so far, that is) are connected, to get to see things at Ashbury from different perspectives. When reading, Emily, Elizabeth, Bindy (Scarlett?) and all the others are almost like pen pals to me as well. I hope that makes sense (; (Isn't it a possibility to make them attend the same university?) Anyway: I REALLY hope your new book is coming to The Netherlands as soon as possible, i'm very much looking forward to read it! (:

So, any new books in the works? :)

Hi Jaclyn,

I am almost finished reading "...Listen Taylor" and haven't been able to put it down. I think I was only 10 pages in before reccommending that my best friend (a 25-year-old teacher) go buy a copy (and she did, but somehow finished it before I did!) I started out thinking that the writing style was bizarre and that the characters had such odd, wandering thought processes. The more I read though, the more I realized that you portrayed EXACTLY the way people think in real life (and now I'm convinced that all of the other books just have it completely wrong). I love that you mention days having "themes". This is totally true. On some days, you just hear a particular word over and over again (on Wednesday I kept hearing "recidivism") or events tie together in a way that seems too planned-out to be a coincidence. Sometimes I think I should start writing the "theme" of each the day on my calendar. Anyway, you have an amazing way of taking odd, obscure ideas (that everyone has probably thought, but not spoken, about) and putting them down in writing. Can't wait to read Dreaming of Amelia next!

-Holly (young adult and aspiring YA fiction writer)

P.S. I totally yank the shower curtain open when I step into the bathroom (to catch anyone who may be hiding behind it).

Thank you again, so much, for everybody's comments, they sure do make me smile, all of them. And Nat, you made me laugh.

And thank you to Marianne and Monique and Anon and Jess (it is so lovely that you've been so loyal all this time, Jess)and incorrigible overthinker (good name) for your kind words.

Jimmy, happy birthday for June, and it was nothing, just a book, I hope you like it.

Gabrielle, thank you for being so generous, and that's a good suggestion - a book set in Brookfield. I'm going to think about that.

Steph, thank you! And I THINK it's going to be the final Ashbury book, but my sister wants me to send them to university, so maybe I will. And I liked Emily's little brother in this book, and I'm wondering about writing about him one day.

Loes, I had no idea that Bindy Mackenzie was called Scarlett's Incredible School Year in the Netherlands, that is wonderful to know. Thank you.

Cathryn, I'm working on a couple of new things at the moment, including a series set in the kingdom of cello, and something about a girl who gets chapters from a self-improvement book in the mail. (And thanks for noticing Saxon, I think you might be the first to make the connection.)

Sarah, I see what you mean, exam flashbacks from the hsc format - I wouldn't like that myself if I'd just finished the hsc. I still have nightmares about the hsc NOW actually. So, not sure what I was thinking. Sorry about that.

Ash, I think I'm going to try to get discussion boards on my new website eventually. Maybe. Anyway, my web designer suggested I shold do that.

And Holly, thank you for being so lovely about Spell Book, and for having recidivism as a theme for the day, and for checking the shower for intruders. You made me laugh too.

Thanks again to everyone, Jx

i haven't quite finished dreaming of Amelia, i've got about 2 chapters to go. I just couldn't help myself, i had to find your website and have a look at it. You write so well.

I wouldn't have found Dreaming of Amelia if it wasn't for my friend (one of my 2 friends i got into your books). We were in the city on city camp... We were really hungry and we couldn't find a Maccas (which is strange considering there's hundreds). We walked past the book store, thought we'd look in it quickly (before we starve to death), my friend pointed it out.... she got it some time later, started it, i got it about 2 weeks after her and now we are up to the spot (doesn't mean she doesn't like it...we've been quoting it all day)......

yea......i guess all that's irrelevent..

i guess i just wrote it so i didn't have to do the dishes which my mum is nagging me about, as we speak.

Thank you for writing FANTASTIC novels.
I hope to read many more of them in the future.

Jaclyn, I just want to say that I blame you for the rather giant purple bags under my eyes.

Yesterday was Christmas day, and 'Dreaming of Amelia' was the first thing I unwrapped. We were out all day, came back home at eleven, and I read the entire book. I woke up this morning at seven. I had four hours of sleep.

Don't feel guilty though (about a stranger you'll never meet, sure thing) - I've worked out that the quality of your writing actually saved me some sleep. If I'd, heaven forbid, put the godforsaken book down, then I would be lying awake wondering what was going to happen and how and why and next thing you know it's daylight.

So I suppose it's a good thing that I couldn't put it down.

Still, though: giant purple bags.

xo Thanks for a wonderful read.

Thanks again for everybody's comments, and I'm sorry it takes me so long to respond.

Iris,I think you should be able to order the UK edition online after it comes out this April?

Elena, thank you for looking forward to June, and Megan, thank you for getting two of your friends to read my books, and for telling the story of how you saw it in Sydney. I like stories.

Anon, thanks for your support, and it IS spooky that you were writing to an Emily at the same time as you were reading Emily's letters in Year of Secret Assignments. Spooky's good because the new book is a ghost story.

Vanessa, you are very kind, and yes, the new book is going to be in the Ashbury series.

Julia, thank you for YOUR story of Christmas Day, and I am honoured that my book gave you a sleepless night and purple bags under your eyes.

Ruby, thank you for your kind words, and hmm, I don't know how to answer the question about whether the ghosts were the ghosts. Tricky. But that's funny that you looked up the glasshouse blogs. I'll tell you a secret, I looked them up once too, when I was writing the book. I didn't know what should happen next and was hoping it might all be there -online- already written.

And Anonymous, thank you, and a PREQUEL, now that's a good idea. I like prequels. I will think about it all...
